Texas City May Toughen Commercial Property Standards

The Richardson, Texas city council is looking at the possibility of toughening building standards for commercial property owners. According to The Dallas Morning News, this isn’t the first city in that state to have an “intensified commercial enforcement program.” In fact, the city of Irvine has stringent building standards for commercial properties and this past year has set stronger guidelines for business signs and dumpster screening.

Part of the reason for the move is to minimize the potential for the decline of older neighborhoods and along major highways. The city has had success with its code enforcement for single-family home and apartment building owners, focusing on such things as broken fences, or in the case of apartment buildings, property maintenance and resident behavior.
